The Prisoner Wine Company is back with a "new" white wine to their lineup. The Blindfold has always been part of their portfolio; however, they have given the wine an entirely new look from the package to the wine inside.
The old Blindfold was a Chardonnay based white blend. According to their website, the 2019 vintage will be the last vintage of that particular wine. However, they have just released the "new and improved" version of Blindfold and we have just gotten some in!
The new version of this wine is Blindfold Blanc de Noir. ‘Blanc de noir’ translates to white of black, or white wine of black/red grapes. Blanc de noir is most commonly seen as a sparkling wine or champagne, but a still Blanc de Noir produces a light, elegant and vibrant white wine with all the nuance and aromatics of a pinot noir.
The Prisoner Wine Company describes their wine as "Still, white-pressed pinot noir with notes of fresh, in-season citrus, white flower, white peach, a hint of tart cranberry. Delicate but lively, elegant, zesty & bright. This wine is made from mostly pinot noir with small amounts of Viognier and Gewurztraminer."
So just to be clear, this new wine is a still wine that is made primarily of Pinot Noir with a little Viognier and Gewurztraminer added in. To keep the color white, they make sure to remove the skins of the Pinot Noir grape before pressing. The color of red wine comes from the skins of the grape, so by removing the skins before pressing, all that is left is the clear juice.
Why did they decide to make this change? Who knows, maybe they couldn't find enough Chardonnay and Pinot Noir seems to be in abundance in California. Whatever the reason, they did a wonderful job on the new packaging as they always seem to do!
We still have a little of the old version of Blindfold, so if you enjoy that, stock up now before it is gone for good! Or, if you are eager to be the first to get your hands on the new and improved Blindfold, we have you covered as well!
