This week's wine is a bit of a wine geeky wine.  Most wine drinkers know the major wine growing regions of France, Burgundy, Rhone, Champagne, Loire and probably the most famous Bordeaux.   One of the most famous wineries in all of Bordeaux is Chateau Lafite Rothschild.  The owners of this Chateau, Domaines Barons de Rothschild, have gone around both France and the world finding wonderful wine growing regions and producing wines in those areas.  One of these wine regions is in the very south of France in the Languedoc-Roussillon.  Within this region is a smaller AOC called Corbieres.

Last week I tried a bottle of the red wine that the Rothschild family is producing from this area, and it was fantastic!  This wine is predominantly Syrah (49%), with Carignan (23%), Mourvèdre (14%), and Grenache (14%).  For those of you that are fans of Rhone or "GSM" blends (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre), this will be right up your alley.

This red is dark red with a beautiful brightness.  The nose has wonderful earthy and rustic tones to it.  The palate is extremely smooth with dark fruits, soft tannins, and notes of the rustic flavors present on the nose all coming through on the finish.

Chateau Lafite is one of the most expensive wines you can find, so I do not get to try it that often, however, this wine costs pennies in comparison.  Now I am not saying that this is anywhere near the same as Chateau Lafite, however, it does come from the same ownership and the passion that goes into the wine making is similar in both.

So many of us get stuck drinking the same types of wine from the same region that every once in a while, we need to try and get out of our comfort zone.  Corbieres is a very fun lesser-known region producing amazing wines.  If you are a fan of full-bodied dark red wines that are smooth and elegant, then I highly recommend trying out the Blason d'Aussieres Corbieres for only $15!!
