Many different countries make wine and many of them make amazing wines. Unfortunately, we tend to limit ourselves to wines from a select few countries. France, Italy, United States and Spain are a few that we tend to gravitate to. Most people hardly ever venture out of their comfort zone and experiment with different countries and regions. I understand we are creatures of habit, and we like to stay with what is safe and what we know, but not venturing out and trying new wines deprives us of many amazing experiences.
South Africa is one of the countries that is extremely underappreciated in the wine world. The fact that more people do not drink more South African wine is not necessarily their fault, but many retailers and restaurants do not give much focus to this country. Typically, if you go to a wine shop, you may find a very small section with 5-10 wines at best. The wine industry in general needs to do a better job at bringing these wines to the public's attention.
Today I am going to try and bring a little attention to this country. The 2020 Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc is an amazing white wine. I really loved this wine when I had it last week. The nose on this wine was amazing! It had a wonderful note of crushed rock, lemon zest, and enticing herbaceousness. The palate is full of lemon mousse, a soft creaminess and a wonderful minerality that was balanced out by a bright acidity and a delicious spicy note.
This wine was given a 91-point score by Vinous and 90-points from Wine Advocate and Decanter. "Fresh, crisp and zesty on the nose, the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc offers aromas of fresh citrus peel and sweet peppers, with a hint of herbaceous character. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively with energetic acidity and shows a clean and correct profile before ending with a fresh, citrus-laced finish that has me daydreaming about raw shellfish." -Wine Advocate
This can easily stand up to those from New Zealand, California and even France. Unfortunately, it is easily overlooked or not even available at most retailers. Lucky, we offer this wonderful wine, and it is only $20. It is well worth it and hopefully will open your eyes to a new country of wines!
