Pat's Pick- Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

I will be the first to admit that Australia is not the first place I think of when I am looking to buy wine.  They did themselves in when they went all in on the cute animals and bright colored labels.

However, if you get past the kangaroos and penguins of the region, they actually have some amazing wines, and the prices are actually excellent as well.

Today I wanted to feature a wine that is only $21.99 and has a 94-point rating! Ok, so it is a 94 from James Suckling, but it also has a 92-point score from Wine Spectator.  Even James Halliday (he is kind of like the James Suckling of Australia with less over exaggerated ratings) gave this wine a 95!

The Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is an excellent wine.  Here are a few of the descriptions from these wine critics.

Halliday "It all hangs together perfectly, from its light crimson hue to its ultra-fragrant bouquet and juicy red and black currant palate. Even better is the structure revealed on the finish and aftertaste: tannins wrought with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker."

Suckling "Plush aromas of blackcurrants, very herbs and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Extremely fine-crafted and curated here. Drink and enjoy now, but it will improve."

Spectator "Rich dark chocolate and mocha notes add complexity to the core of wild blackberry, plum and cassis flavors in this red, with fresh minty herbal accents, a green cardamon note and velvety tannins giving this an air of elegance. Drink now through 2038."

That last sentence is pretty amazing.  There are not many $20 Cabernets that you can age for nearly 20 years.  I sure wouldn't try that with most California Cabernets in that price point.  This comes from Margaret River in Australia and Vasse Felix is the regions first winery established in 1967.

So, even if you think all wines from down under are goofy animals and bright colors (as I have thought in the past), please start to reconsider.  Australia makes some outstanding wines, and this is just one great example to try!
