Stolpman Vineyards Para Maria De Los Tecolotes 2017 - 750ml
92 - 95 Points Vinous
The 2017 Syrah Para Maria is another attractive wine from Stolpman. Here, too, the fruit is bright, precise and articulate, which is to say quite a departure from the style of the 2016. Generous and pliant on the palate, with no hard edges and striking aromatics, the 2017 is shaping up to be a real beauty. The 2017 is a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Petite Verdot (all purchased fruit) done with about 40% carbonic maceration. Don't miss it.
This will be a crowd-pleaser with its easy, Côtes-du-Rhone style. 4,400 cases produced.
Ruben Solorzano, known as the "Vine Whisperer" in Santa Barbara County, has managed to construct a viticultural empire over the last decade, consulting for dozens of vineyards throughout the area. He knows these peaks, hillsides and exposures like the back of his hand, so when he suggested to Pete Stolpman of Stolpman Vineyards, that they start a project that each year would feature a different aspect of the diverse terroir of Santa Barbara County, Pete immediately agreed. With Ruben selecting the parcel and the Stolpman winemaking team crafting the wine, it's a match made in a wine-drinker's heaven. The resulting wine, "Para Maria de los Tecolotes," is named in honor of Ruben's wife, Maria, the forewoman at Stolpman Vineyards and another of the estate's unsung heroes. While Ruben is sometimes away consulting those other properties, Maria stays home at Stolpman, implementing all his viticultural practices.
The 2017 vintage pours a deep purple in the glass. Aromas of dark, dense fruit — blueberries and cassis — dominate the inviting and lush nose with a hint of olive tapenade. The palate is bold, yet refined; a gorgeous blend of blue-black fruit, savory herbs and fine acidity. One-third of the Syrah undergoes carbonic maceration, giving the mid-palate a distinctly fresh, red fruit flavor and brings a bright energy and balance to the wine. This is a dark, deeply delicious wine that is inherently drinkable, while also being extremely food friendly.
