Bindi 'Kostas Rind' Chardonnay 2016 - 750ml

$ 72.00

‘Kostas Rind’ took the place of ‘Composition’ in the Bindi family with the 2013 release. It is dedicated to Kostas Rind, a Lithuanian sage who epitomized wisdom and humility. From 1958, at Ballarat Grammar School, Kostas mentored Bill Darshan Singh Dhillon and later introduced him to the culture and celebration of fine wine. It was Kostas who foresaw that Bill would work on the land. The first Bindi wine, 1991 Chardonnay, was a tribute to Kostas and this wine, from the same volcanic and Ordovician soils planted in 1988, continues that acknowledgement.

Winemaker's Notes

The Kostas Rind Chardonnay is grown in a 1.5 hectare plot from the middle and lower sections of the Chardonnay blocks planted in 1988. The wine is fermented in French barrels of which typically 25% are new. Fermentation occurs without the addition of cultured yeast and the wine remains in barrel on yeast lees over winter with only a small amount of malolactic conversion taking place. It is racked around eight months after vintage, and returned to barrel for a further three months before bottling.

Following the marvelous 2015 'Kostas' is quite a challenge for the 2016 vintage, though it has happily risen to the task. As always, there is a lot of fragrance of lemon and pithy grapefruit lifted by white flowers and orange blossom. One year on all solids and lees has added a mealy complexity and a gentle savory restraint. The palate is mouth filling, intense in acidity, creamy, flowing, relatively rich and very long. There is a certain chalkiness and tension in the wine that weaves its way through the back palate and sits inside the harmonious finish. Another three years will be of great benefit in delivering added complexity and texture.
