Inky ruby. Smoke and spice-accented dark fruits, pungent flowers and subtle oak spiciness on the perfumed nose. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, showing good heft as well as energy to the biter cherry and blackberry flavors. Finishes long and spicy, with even tannins and bright closing lift.
Creta is an Eric Solomon custom cuvée made in partnership with Rafael de Haan from 30-50 year old Tempranillo vines planted in the village of Sotillo de la Ribera. It is harvested by hand, brought to the cellar where the grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed.
Sotillo de la Ribera is a small village of 600 inhabitants on the northern edge of the DO of Ribera del Duero. Dating back to the middle ages, many of the buildings in Sotillo date to the 18th century when grape growing and winemaking brought prosperity to the village – a tradition which continues today. After many years’ experience making a custom cuvée in the DO, Eric Solomon has recently partnered with Rafael de Haan to make Creta from 30-50 year old vines of Tempranillo grown in clay loam and chalky soils surrounding Sotillo. It is harvested by hand, brought to the cellar where the grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed. A pre-fermentation maceration of 4-6 days is followed by a 10 day fermentation with pump overs to keep the cap from drying. Malo occurs spontaneously in tank after which the wine is racked into 225L and 600L French oak barrels (mostly used) where the wines ages for 4 months before bottling.
Ribera del Duero is located in northen Spain’s Castilla y León region, just a 2-hour drive from Madrid. While winemaking in this area goes back more than 2000 years, it was in the 1980s that 9 wineries applied for and were granted Denominación de Origen (D.O.) status. Today, more than 300 wineries call Ribera del Duero home, including some of Spain’s most iconic names.
Notable Facts Ribera’s main grape variety, Tempranillo, locally know as Tinto Fino, is perfectly suited to the extreme climate of the region, where it must survive scorching summers and frigid winters. Low yields resulting from conscientious tending to old vines planted in Ribera’s diverse soils types, give Ribera wines a distinctive depth and complexity not found in other Tempranillos. Rich and full-bodied, the spice, dark fruit and smoky flavors in a bold Ribera del Duero will pair well with roasted and grilled meats, Mexican food and tomato-based sauces.

Shipping wine around the country is very expensive. We charge about a third less than what it actually costs us. If you need to return your order (or if the wine gets returned back to us because you were unable to receive it after 3 attempts and you didn't email us to make other arrangements), we need to collect a return shipping fee that is up to double the amount of the shipping you paid. Upon receiving the wine back we will refund for the wine minus the initial shipping cost. In the event that we make a mistake we work with you to fix whatever went wrong at no additional cost to you.
