K Vintners Powerline Syrah 2017 - 750ml
95 Points Jeb Dunnuck
Blackcurrants, sliced strawberries, cured meats, and dried herb notes all emerge from the 2017 Syrah The Beautiful Powerline Vineyard, and it shows a more seamless, elegant style that still carries considerable power and richness. Polished, nicely concentrated, and long, give it another 3-4 years if you can. This comes all from clone 470 of Syrah and was co-fermented with 3% Viognier
Winemaker Notes: 2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for heathy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
A 30-acre estate vineyard, located over 1200 feet elevation. Powerline Vineyard was planted in 2012 in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, just south of Walla Walla in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The soils are well drained with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The cobblestone rock was brought down river from the Blue Mountains and deposited on top of the ancient river bed. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable complex characters.
The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.
Located at the base of the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla Washington, Charles Smith opened his first winery, K Vintners, in December of 2001. The property at 820 Mill Creek Road where the winery sits was homesteaded in 1853 with the adjacent farmhouse built in 1872. The winery grounds with Titus Creek flowing through the lawn and the old pioneer planted trees, is a little slice of heartland Americana. The Winemaker: He loves to drink wine! Charles Smith, proprietor and winemaker, comes to Walla Walla after 11 years in Scandinavia. Originally from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his whole life. And did we forget to mention... he loves to drink wine! The Vineyards: K Vintners is producing wines from 2 distinctive viticultural zones: Wahluke Slope and Walla Walla Valley. Each of these areas are unique and awesome for Syrah and the Field Blends produced. In April '02 two separate blocks of vineyards were planted to Syrah adjacent to the winery in the rocky dry creek beds that run through K Vintners property.
Year in and year out, the K Vintners wines are wonderfully expressive single-vineyard wines with the courage of their convictions, whether they stand out for their New World fruit or savory Old World soil tones. Winemaker Brennon Leighton, who joined Smith’s empire in 2012 and is now director of winemaking and vineyards, told me that Smith buys all of his fruit by the acre rather than by weight, and also controls the vineyard work during the growing season. He added that the K Vintners wines from flood soils tend to give more fruit, while the bottlings from ancient soils are more minerally and complex, typically from volcanic bedrock and/or limestone (caliche). The K reds from Rhone varieties are made entirely with whole clusters and all of the K reds get extended macerations of up to 60 days. The Syrah bottlings in particular exhibit a broad range of distinctive personalities that showcase the versatility of this noble variety.
